The Sense Ride 4 keeps the Contagrip MA outsole on Sense Ride 3, which I think was a versatile sole. I got through 3 pairs, using them on the road, gravel, grass, fields and rocky terrain. This versatility makes the shoe a genuine multi-terrain running shoe. I managed to get over 920km out of each of my shoes – that’s good value for money when the ballpark figure for trainer milage is 650km.
For that medium to long-distance runs on the trail, I don’t doubt that a multi-terrain sole is the best option because not many trail routes only feature one specific type of terrain. They’re a mix of 2, 3 or 4. The Ride 4 will work best on light to medium mixed trail terrain. On super soft, boggy mud, it will struggle as the sole wears down.
