I will be taking part 100K Ultramarathon event in July 2021. I’ve now become stepping up my training to incorporate longer runs and back-to-back long runs. To help my feet deal with the trauma, I wanted to get a good quality set of insoles. I’ve heard good things about Superfeet, so I decided to give them a try. After looking at the options, I ended up buying the Superfeet Run Pain Relief insoles. In this review, I’ll share my reasons for buying them and how they are working out for me.

Why I chose the Superfeet Run Pain Relief Insoles

As I mentioned in the introduction, I have a 100K ultra event in July, and wanted to try training with running insoles. I know on the day of the race that the pain will come at some point – it’s inevitable. Therefore, I wanted some good quality insoles that could slow down the creeping pain on race day and help me during my training.

The Superfeet Run Pain Relief insoles were described as suitable for medium arches, come with a medium thickness and are suitable for running shoes with removable insoles. The trail shoes I have been using are the Salomon Sense Ride 4, and the Orthalite insoles are removable and have plenty of room.

If your running shoes have a slightly tight fit, then these insoles are probably not right for you. There are lower volume Superfeet options though – such as this insole.

First Impressions Of The Superfeet Run Pain Relief Insoles

The insoles come with two heel stabilisers, which you can see in the picture above. The stabilisers’ purpose is to add extra structure and support, designed to keep the pain-relieving shape closer to the foot. I haven’t bothered using them yet. I did try my shoes on with them in, and it felt like it raised my foot a little too high in the shoe.

The insoles came with fitting trimming instructions:

  1. Remove
  2. Line up and trace
  3. Trim the insoles
  4. Insert and test the size

I must have got lucky – I ordered a UK 10-11.5, and they fitted my Salomon Sense Ride 4 perfectly, so I didn’t need to do any trimming at all. Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem that hard; trace your existing insole, trim any excess and bingo, you’re all done and ready to run.

Straight away, I noticed a real difference without even running – my shoe felt more comfortable, and my feet seemed more stable.

Back-To-Back Long Runs In My Superfeet Insoles

On my first weekend owning the insoles, I managed 35K, and 30K back-to-back runs on a Friday and Saturday. The first run was on a mixture of road, hard-packed dirt, grass, canal and gravel paths. Usually, running on these hard surfaces would have taken its toll on my feet. However, the next day, they felt pretty damn good. My second run was on a mix of road, grass fields and mud trails. I have to say I was pleased with how they performed, and I think these will be my choice of insole for the rest of my training, and I’ll probably buy another set for race day.

I will update this section as I do more runs using these insoles and let you guys know how long they last. The product description says that the insoles will provide reliable comfort and support for 12 months or 500 miles – whichever comes sooner. Well, I know the insoles will not last 12 months. I usually do about 55 miles per week, and now I’m in training for my ultra, this will increase to 75/80 miles per week. If you run big miles every week, then these insoles could get very expensive over a year. As a result, I will probably only use them when training for a specific race and when my weekly running distance increases.
